This publication examines in detail two extraordinary, interrelated works: Picasso’s Woman with a Book (1932) and Ingres’s Madame Moitessier (1856). Each painting is explored in depth, illuminating the parallels and differences between the artists’ techniques and creative ambitions.

Picasso encountered Madame Moitessier at an exhibition in Paris in 1921 and never forgot it. Eleven years later, while engrossed in a series of works that depict the artist’s young lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter, Picasso painted Woman with a Book, one of the most direct homages to Ingres that he had made to date.

With chapters exploring the twelve-year gestation of Ingres’s Madame Moitessier; Picasso’s response, painted in just a day or two; and the artists’ approach to dress and decorative details, this generously illustrated book celebrates the unique relationship between these two masterpieces.
