Few British artists enjoy the kind of notoriety and reverence that JMW Turner receives.  

Born in London in 1775, John Mallord William Turner is one of the best loved painters of the English Romantic movement. Turner created a vast collection of works, including 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper.

During his lifetime, Turner was championed by art critic John Ruskin, and is widely thought to have propelled landscape painting to a new level of artistic importance.
