Description
Crafted in limited quantities, this striking earthenware jug is a tribute to London’s artistic legacy and the spirit of the National Gallery.
Designed exclusively for the Gallery by Sussex Lustreware, the jug features bold lettering that reads "Take Me to London, City of Art" on one side, and a finely drawn view of Trafalgar Square and the National Gallery facade on the other side.
Inside the rim is the phrase "The Nation’s Mantelpiece", paired with a moving poem by Louis MacNeice, written in response to the return of treasured paintings from Welsh mines after the war.
Decorative and functional, the jug has a large four-pint capacity, ideal for holding flowers, or artist’s brushes. A collector’s piece, rich with meaning and beautifully made.
Handmade by artisans in Staffordshire and finished in Stoke-on-Trent, each piece is fired four times to achieve its soft sheen and fine detail.
Care
Hand wash only. Not suitable for dishwasher or microwave use. Treat with care to maintain its original finish.
Sussex Lustreware
Exclusive designs commissioned to celebrate the National Gallery and reopening of our Sainsbury Wing. Made in the UK from earthenware, each item is slip cast and hand-decorated. The cheerful pink glaze and delicate transfers draw inspiration from 19th-century Sunderland lustreware—a style cherished for its shimmering colour and storytelling.
