Duccio Predella 8 Panel Concertina Card
Description
Duccio's Maestà ('majesty') altarpiece was welcomed to Siena Cathedral by the sound of trumpets and kettledrums on 9 June 1311. The Maestà has the earliest surviving narrative predella, or altarpiece base, with the panels from the back of the predella showing events from Christ's life as a eacher and performer of miracles. The Siena: The Rise of Painting 1300 - 1350 exhibition reunites all eight of the surviving panels from the back predella for the first time since their dispersal some 250 years ago.
