During his brief yet varied career, Francesco Pesellino (1422–1457) rose to notable heights, receiving prestigious commissions for the papal court and becoming a favourite of Florence’s ruling Medici family. His death at the age of only 35 cut short a rising star of the early Renaissance.
A remarkable draughtsman, miniaturist and painter of animals, Pesellino often worked collaboratively with leading artists of the day such as Fra Filippo Lippi. While he excelled in producing works on a small scale with exquisite detail, in his later years he grew in ambition, becoming a painter of grand altarpieces.
This comprehensive publication explores Pesellino’s life and work, with new insights provided by the conservation of the National Gallery’s cassone panels depicting the story of David and Goliath, where the artist’s skill as a storyteller is matched by his technical mastery.
